In 2013, our client, Sanlam Private Investments (SPI) – now known as Sanlam Private Wealth – launched the first SPI National Portrait Award. The award aims to celebrate and showcase the best original portrait artwork in South Africa.
We joined in the celebrations at the Rust-en-Vrede Art Gallery in Durbanville on 27 August, where KwaZulu-Natal artist Heather Gourlay-Conyngham was announced the winner for her nude male portrait entitled ‘A Young Man’.
Gourlay-Conyngham’s winning portrait beat a staggering 1 783 adjudicated entries to the top prize of R100 000. Her work joined 39 other selected entries in an exhibition held at Rust-en-Vrede, after which the 40 works toured South Africa in an exhibition presented in collaboration with the Sanlam Art Collection.
