The Challenge

The perception of executive search is that of ‘head-hunters’ and there are negative connotations associated with that term when people think of using these services. There is also perceived little differentiation between one search firm and the other. In some instances, finding and hiring the right leadership for an organisation can be reduced to box-ticking without critical thinking. It also requires a strong relationship-based business model. The new CEO took over the firm in early 2016 and requested the services of Atmosphere Communications to lift his profile as well as the business.

The Idea

In recent years, South Africa has grappled with a severe leadership crisis and Atmosphere Communications used this insight to roll out a media engagement programme tackling some of these issues through commentary. The approach used earned editorial, as this holds the greatest credibility, to position the CEO and as a key commentator on leadership in South Africa.

Through a series of well-crafted thought leadership articles, meetings with key media contacts, interviews and strategic news-jacking, Atmosphere Communications was able to profile the CEO and the business by tapping into current leadership issues. This positioned the CEO as a person who understands the requirements of finding and placing the right c-suite leadership for some of South Africa’s top JSE listed companies.

The Results

During the period of leadership transition, Atmosphere attained more qualitative pieces of coverage and had a consistent presence in the leading South African business media. The content pieces also shifted from mainly opportunistic media commentary towards longer, more in-depth thought leadership articles as well as radio and TV interviews.
