A Word From Our A Team Intern
By Inganathi Mnyasane, Atmosphere intern
When I arrived for my job interview at Atmosphere, I was presented with the spirit and culture of the company as I walked through the front door. There was a celebration; the veranda was laden with food and cheerful people. It was then that I decided that I want to work here and it’s that decision that gave me confidence during the interview.
So here I am, having gone through three parties, two changes of hairstyles, and one tattoo and still enjoying every moment of my internship. In the last three months, I have learnt a lot from my colleagues and a few people at the bar, here are three things that have really stood out:
Firstly, my job as an intern is crucial to the team, the support that I provide and everything that I’m tasked with, if done properly and timeously, allows the team to function properly. If I do not work efficiently, my entire team suffers. And the bonus is that none of the work is as nightmarish as what I’ve seen in The Devil Wears Prada.
Secondly, communication is the proverbial key that unlocks the treasure chest filled with gold. As great as communication is sometimes, it can be tricky because not all news is good news. Receiving feedback can be uncomfortable and it took me some time to understand that it is the feedback that helps me get better at doing what I need to do.
Lastly, I have learnt that “it be like that sometimes”. In the first few weeks of starting at Atmosphere I would go home and think about all the things I could have done better, all the things I should have said but didn’t. I learnt not to beat myself up and to take every day as it comes; solutions to issues will not come immediately. The pressure doesn’t end, that’s just the nature of the PR industry.
